Start Seeds Step-by-Step
Step 3 Transplant
Some varieties require that you transplant them into larger containers. For larger plants, such as tomatoes, you can use the 4 square plastic containers; while for others, such as cabbage, we put them into 3 peat pots. Remember that some plants do not like their roots disturbed when they become adults, and these should go into peat pot containers.

Cover plant roots with soil |
You dont have to use a seed starter mixture when transplanting into larger pots, simply use a good fertile soil mixed with a little regular peat moss (not the milled sphagnum type), vermiculite and/or perlite, which aids in air circulation of the roots and helps prevent root rot. Continue to place the plants under the florescent lights with the ON/OFF timer but make sure the plant leaves dont touch the lights. This normally requires that you can adjust either the lights or the shelves the plants sit upon. Once a week we add a liquid fertilizer to the watering can, but dont over-do it. Water with a half strength water-soluble fertilizer like Shultz's Plant Food.
