Smoked Butt And Bean Soup

3/4 lb. smoked butt or ham, cubed
1 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp. margarine
4 cans (16 ounces each) great northern beans
2 cans chicken broth
1 c. diced, peeled potatoes
1 c. diced carrots
3/4 c. diced celery
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 c. frozen peas

IIn a 3-qt. saucepan, sauté smoked butt, onion and garlic in better until onion is tender. Add the next seven ingredients; cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add peas and cook for 5 minutes. Makes 8 servings
