Planting Transplants
Never place plants outside based on dates. Rather, you must determine the climate conditions that prevail at that time, and use good judgment. Some springs are very cold and wet, and your transplanting should be delayed in those years. One year we lost the peas twice because we planted too early, the ground being too wet, the peas simply rotted out.
The best weather for transplants is cloudy, misty calm weather. The worst is a bright, sunny windy day. Cut a hole in the black plastic, use the trowel to dig out a proper size hole, place a small amount of fertilizer in the hole, return a small amount of the soil, place the transplant in the hole, and add enough soil to fill in the air spaces. Then give it a good watering with about a quart (liter) of water.
