How We Plant Radishes

Radish SeedRadishes, like lettuce and cabbage, like cool weather, and are even frost tolerant, but can bolt when hot. They seem to grow best at temperatures between 50 to 65 degrees F. Make sure soil temperature is above 45 degrees F before you plant radishes. During the growing season, make sure the radishes do not dry out. They need to grow quickly or they will crack. Since they require very low nutrient levels, fertilize carefully.

To plant, about 5 weeks before the last spring frost, plant the radishes in the outdoor garden. First cut a 12” slit in the plastic and dig a very shallow trench, about 1/2” deep. Scatter the small radish seeds along the trench lightly and cover with soil. Water lightly. When the seedlings emerge and are about 2” tall, thin so plants are 1” to 2” apart.

In years past we have grown Early Scarlet Globe radishes and have never had any trouble with them. As we get older, we plan on eating more radishes as they are very healthful and good on the waistline.
