How We Plant Carrots

Robin Sprinkling The Seed Into The SlitCarrots seeds are placed directly in the outdoor garden as soon as the soil can be worked; the seeds should not be transplanted. Carrots like cool weather, between 60 to 70 degrees F is ideal. The seeds should be planted shallow – only about 1/2” deep. The soil should be light and loose for carrots to grow properly. Hard, compact soil will normally not produce good carrots. If the moisture level is not uniform, the carrots can split.

To plant, cut a 12” slit in the black plastic, pour seeds into a cup, add some soilless mixture in cup and mix with seeds, pour contents of cup into slit, press seeds into soil and water lightly. When seeds start to emerge, in about 6-20 days, thin to about 2” between plants. Plant in late April to mid-July.

Some people can grow good carrots but we have difficulty with them. Our carrots are good to eat, but they don’t look as good as store bought ones. This might be due to overcrowding, as Robin has difficulty ‘killing’ the young seedlings to thin them out! This is a future challenge for us.

We usually plant Excel Scarlet Nantes carrots, planting them in the garden during the last week of April.
