Water Collection Barrel

Water Collection Barrel

Materials Needed:

Whisky barrel
Scrap pieces of furring strips
Wood s
crews
Sheet metal screws
Metal or wooden handle
90-degree rain gutter elbow
Waterproof outdoor glue

Instructions:

Remove Elbow And Strap

1) Remove existing drainpipe elbow and support strap. Save elbow to use later. See illustration A.

Line Up And Cut Off Downspout

2) Attach 90-degree elbow to existing elbow with sheet metal screws as shown in Illustration B.

3) Determine where to cut downspout so 90-degree elbow will be about 1” above top of rain barrel. If you do not want to cut your existing downspout, then purchase a new one. Cut off existing down spout using a hack saw at proper height. See illustration B. Attach elbows to existing downspout with screws.

4) Remove one end (lid) of the barrel if it is not already removed.

Note: Depending on the type of barrel being used, the end may have to be cut off or some of the metal bands around the barrel end may have to be removed to remove the lid. Replace the bands after the lid is removed.

Assembling Lid

5) End of barrel is normally composed of loose-fitting planks. Using furring strips, glue and screw furring strips to bottom of barrel lid as shown in illustration C. Be sure to use waterproof outdoor glue. Cut a slot (notch) in the lid where water will enter barrel. Screw a wood or metal handle to topside of lid.

6) Screw several short furring strips to inside of barrel to act as supports for lid of barrel. They should be about 1” below the top of the barrel. See illustration D.

Finish Water Barrel

7) Water evaporates less if cover is on barrel. To use, remove cover and dip watering can in barrel. Replace cover when finished. Make sure top slot is located at end of 90-degree elbow, allowing water to enter barrel.
