Retain Moisture For Potted Plants

Burlap Used In Half BarrelsMaterials Needed:

Burlap potato sacks or a roll of heavy landscape burlap
Landscape fabric pins
Large Pots or half barrels
Quality potting soil
Plants
Wood chips or cocoa beans mulch (optional)
Soaker hose
Ruler with hole in one end
Permanent marker
Pencil
Scissors

Instructions:

1) Fill pot or pots with a good garden soil about half way to the top.

2) Attach soaker hose to faucet or to a water timer and wrap other end once or twice in a spiral onto the top of the soil as shown in illustration A. If using more than one pot, continue spiraling the hose into the next pot or pots. Top off with more soil up to two inches from the rim of the pots.

3) Measure the circumference of the top rim of the pots. With a ruler, pencil and marker, mark the burlap as shown in illustration B. Cut circle out with scissors.

4) Place burlap circle on top of soil in pot and secure with 3 to 4 landscape fabric pins.

Planting:

1) With a scissors, cut a 3 to 4 inch “X” into the center of the burlap circle. Temporally tuck the flaps of the “X” to the underside. With a trowel, dig a hole in the soil to the depth of the roots of the plant you are planting. (Tomatoes can be planted deeper) Place plant in hole and work soil around the base of the plant. Move burlap flaps around base of plant.

2) Optional: If you don't like the look of the burlap spread wood chips or cocoa bean mulch on top. This will also help keep the moisture in the soil.

3) Turn the water on to the soaker hose and run the water for about 15 minutes or until soil is moist. Turn water on daily as needed.
